DEEP DIVE
π€ΏDeep Dive: How AI Will Help Monkeys
In the ever-evolving landscape of pharmaceuticals, the rising cost of monkeys (yes, you read that right) and ethical concerns about animal testing have given birth to a new superhero: Artificial Intelligence (AI). Let's dive into this story of innovation and compassion.
Remember the exorbitant prices of monkeys used in drug testing?
Blame it on the pandemic.
Due to export halts from China, prices soared to a staggering $55,000 in 2023. But beyond the financial strain, pharmaceutical companies face ethical challenges. Animal rights groups have long accused them of unnecessary cruelty, leading to a search for alternatives.

Cue Quantiphi, a Boston-based AI startup on a mission. They introduced "digital animal replacement technology" known as Dart.
The aim?
To cut down both time and costs in the pre-clinical testing phase by a whopping 45%.
Typically taking one to two years and costing $120-135 million per drug, this phase heavily relies on animal testing, often involving expensive and delicate monkeys. Not to mention the logistical nightmare of exporting them from warmer climates like Cambodia. And sadly, many animals don't make it, succumbing to illness or stress during transit.
Quantiphi's Dart uses AI to administer drugs to human cells, then a digital microscope captures images for analysis.
The results?
A 92-95% match to traditional animal testing methods, without the mental strain on scientists or the ethical dilemmas.
The company collaborates with Transcell, ethically sourcing stem cells from donated umbilical cords, providing a purer form for testing. With Dart, they aim not only to replace animal testing but to contribute to curing major diseases, including cancer.
Quantiphi isn't the only player in this game. VeriSIM Life, a US-based biotech startup, creates AI-driven simulations predicting drug reactions in both animals and humans. Even traditional healthcare companies are joining the fray, with Charles River Laboratories investing $200 million in alternatives like AI.
Regulators are onboard too. A 2022 US law eliminated the requirement for animal testing, paving the way for digital alternatives. Now, companies like Quantiphi need to prove that AI is not just a trend but a viable, ethical solution for the future of drug development.
So, farewell to the era of monkey business; AI is here to lead the way in drug development, making it more efficient, humane, and compassionate. Let's cheer on these innovators as they work towards a future where breakthroughs don't come at the cost of innocent lives.
